Intertwined Fragments
2025

Intertwined Fragments explores the overlap between three themes of memories and current views that triggered them to arise to the surface. In Merry, vivid memories of making cookies at my grandmother’s house collide with my present self walking through leaves that are reminiscent of those at her house. Lost presents family members who have passed away and my precious, but fading memories of them. Escape displays hazy summer days, like those at the beach with my sister along with present moments along the East River.

This body of work developed from my time reminiscing and processing many moments from my childhood as I enter my final semester of college. My time reflecting is visually represented in the suspended mobiles. Their movement mimics the trees I was surrounded by in my youth and are made from the branches of my present.

The mobiles are tied together with embroidery floss, allowing the different elements to move, constantly changing the viewing experience. The images are a mix of archival images from my parents' collection and new images taken in my day to day life. They are layered together to make double exposures, showing the past and present colliding. Opaque photo paper and transparent paper are both used to highlight and obscure different images to represent the haziness of memory. These mobiles invite viewers to enter a contemplative state and allow them to confront their own memories similar to my own.
